Chic - Risque: This is a strong runner for best disco album ever, which obviously means I wouldn’t argue with anyone claiming it as the best anything album ever. I put it on while writing a presentation script, but I ended up getting lost in it anyway. It’s getting better the older I get, too - barely-concealed sadness and unassuming elegance. An amazing peak.
One hell of an album. Admittedly, when I was in the depths of my Chic obsession - circa being 21, in my Lloyd-from-Phonogram stage - the one which I really played the vinyl flat was C’est Chic, which - in Lloyds Dexys-o-vision - was more Too-Rye-Aye than Don’t Stand Me Down.
That said, AT LAST I AM FREE from C’est Chic was the song which, in my head, Dazzler was singing in the first eight page story I wrote for Marvel. I called it SOLO, because that travels better, but if it was a Phonogram story, it’d have totally been called AT LAST I AM FREE.
