Two of my favorite writers in comics open write a very similar opening shot in their respective first issues in two wildly different ways to the above results.

There’s not a right way to do this — just lots of wrong ways for you.

What do you have to write to get the page out of your head?

Top, FROM HELL #1 - Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell, and the attendant script pages for Page One, Panel One (taken from FROM HELL: THE COMPLEAT SCRIPTS, 1994).

Basically, meditating on this kind of thing is where you decide who you are as a comic writer.

“Then I got the email through from Lauren asking about it, I’d just got back from an event and was super tired, lying on the floor checking my mail on my phone. My phone didn’t show the email properly, so I was like… is this spam? What the hell is this? I nearly deleted it, lol. Then I was like, waaaaait a fucking minute, and passed it to my boyfriend to double-check. THEN I got super excited… but it didn’t really feel real until Jamie DM’d me the next day about it all and I found out they’d put my name forward. It was a big surprise and I was super flattered. But that was it, really, just got emailed about it…! I then proceeded to freak out a little bit, like, “I’m really gonna do this…..?! I hope I don’t mess up!!!”

Young Avengers Playlist Update

For those recent to the blog, I lobbed up the Young Avengers playlist early on. It’s all here and the majority of it is on the Young Avengers Spotify playlist.

I mentioned it’s a working playlist - as in, I primarily use it when writing, and still play with it, adding stuff as it occurs to me. I’ve been doing that since publishing it, and these have found their way on. I put them in a handy list…

Except now I’ve just done a quick sort, and moved them all to narratively appropriate positions in the playlist.

(The playlist has a rough structure which speaks to the flow of the season.)

So now they’re sorted in the deck, which struck me as a good time to i) show what cards have been added to decks
ii) tell people who had no idea there was even a deck that there was a deck.

How’s writing going? I’m up to 11 or so complete issues, and now seem to be working on the last four of the season simultaneously, because it’s that kind of comic. I’m also resisting the urge to do Edits of JIM/YA art with lyrics from Chvrches’ Recover.

Honestly, means the world when anyone gets what we’re trying to do with Young Avengers at all, and when four people who do are in a room together seems incredible, especially when half of them are working comic pros.

Kathryn confirmed it over here, but I wanted to hail its passing.

(Also I wanted an excuse to lob up this particular cover, which I loved)

Kathryn and Schiti had a nightmarishly difficult job, which they nailed. It was funny. It was human and humane. It was great. And people are singing the sadness of its particular loss already (here and here for two).

And let’s spin this to glass half full: 10 issues wasn’t bad at all.

In the same way that there were people saying that my JIM would last 8 issues, I suspect if you were the betting sort, “Sif Solo continuing from a book that was on 20k sales, without a creative team with a huge following, and no new #1” you’d have put your money on it only managing an arc.

It was something special, so beat the odds.

Think of its passing in a way I think Lady Sif may approve of:

This wasn’t a defeat. This was a victory.

And to paraphrase something from my own run:

It’s better to be good fiction for 10 issues than bad issues forever.

I raise a glass to all those who sailed the good ship Journey Into Mystery as it sets sail for Valhalla.

- The last Iain Banks interview has just been put up at the Guardian. It’s strong stuff. I didn’t know what quote to pull, so have grabbed it. Him on the politics, death and his plans will probably leap out at you, but this one says something about what I loved about his Science Fiction work.

(I’d also agree that SONG OF STONE is one of the under-rated ones. Not easy in any way, not a crowd-pleaser, but has real poetry to it.)

In the Newsarama interview a couple of days ago, it was mentioned that Carlo Pagulayan was taking over Iron Man from Greg Land for the end of THE SECRET ORIGIN OF TONY STARK. He starts on 15.

Here’s a page. He’s doing lovely stuff, and with him doing the design work on the Iron Man suits at the opening of my run, it’s especially good to have him coming aboard to finish the first year on the book.
